Commitment to achieving net zero

Cambridge Machine Learning Ltd is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2030, well ahead of the UK Government's 2050 target.

We are a micro business with one director and no employees. We work remotely from a home office in Bristol, have no business premises or company vehicles, and deliver our AI and data science services digitally using cloud computing.

Baseline emissions footprint

Baseline year: 1 December 2024 to 30 November 2025 (our financial year).

Our emissions are estimated following the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard, using the UK Government greenhouse gas conversion factors for company reporting. Where we have no metered data, we use activity estimates and spend-based factors. We will replace these estimates with measured data as it becomes available.

Emissions reduction targets

We aim to reduce our total emissions by at least 50% from the 2024/25 baseline by 2030 (to 0.55 tCO2e or less), and to reach net zero in 2030 by permanently removing any remaining emissions through verified carbon removal projects.

Carbon reduction projects

Measures we already take:

  • Remote working, with no commuting or business premises.
  • Meetings held online by default; rail rather than car or air for necessary travel.
  • Digital-only delivery, with no physical products or printed materials.

Measures we will take during the life of our contracts:

  • Run our home office on a 100% renewable electricity tariff by the end of 2027.
  • Prefer cloud regions and providers that match their electricity use with renewable energy, and size AI workloads efficiently (smaller models, caching and shutting down idle resources).
  • Extend the working life of IT equipment and buy refurbished where possible, recycling equipment at end of life.
  • Measure our emissions every year and report progress here.
  • Where it helps our clients, share practical guidance on the energy use of AI systems.
